Isle of skye 2027

Isle of Skye course 2027

Isle of Skye

Skye at its rawest, seen only from the sea.

Four days guided around the Isle of Skye, one of Scotland’s most dramatic coastlines. Think towering cliffs, sea stacks, arches and caves, with swell moving through them and a landscape that most people only ever see from a distance. The route is chosen to suit the conditions and the group.

This is a trip I’m excited to share. Skye looks completely different from the water, and with the right planning and the right company it’s an unforgettable place to paddle. You won’t just be paddling a stunning coastline, you’ll be exploring it with someone who can read it, guide you safely through it, and bring it to life.

Is it for me?

Are you comfortable paddling your sea kayak in moderate conditions, with some experience in force 4 winds and swells of around a metre?

Are you keen to take it further, onto a more exposed and committing coast, with cliffs, caves and swell?

Do you love the idea of a proper few days on the sea, under your own steam, with big horizons and the chance to paddle places that only a sea kayak can reach?

Don’t worry if you haven’t paddled coast like this before. Bring the fundamentals and a sense of adventure, and I’ll take care of the rest.

What will the trip involve?

After we’ve got to know each other and talked through everyone’s experience and hopes for the trip, I’ll plan a journey that makes the most of the conditions and the group’s ability. We’ll spend our days paddling beneath the cliffs and through the arches and caves, with time to soak up the views, watch for wildlife and explore corners of coast most people never see. The wind, swell and tides decide the plan each day, and I take care of the tidal and weather planning so you can enjoy it.

Throughout, I’ll be on hand to guide you, share what I know, and offer coaching and tips wherever they’ll help, whether that’s your paddling in swell, your rock-hopping, or your reading of the sea. This is a guided trip first and foremost, but you’ll come away a more confident, capable sea paddler.

Where will we be?

Around the Isle of Skye. The exact location depends on the wind, swell and forecast, and the group’s ability, so I’ll pick the best stretch of coast to give you a brilliant, safe and memorable few days.

Wherever we end up, expect:

  • Dramatic scenery: towering cliffs, sea stacks, arches and caves, seen from the water.

  • Wildlife: seals and seabirds along the cliffs, otters on the shoreline, and, if you’re lucky, a sea eagle overhead or dolphins in the water.

  • Genuine remoteness: empty coastline, and the rare feeling of being properly away from it all, in places reachable only by kayak.

You will need to source your own accommodation, but get in touch and I will help with recommendations.

Kit

Boats and paddles can be hired from us at a discounted rate when you book: SKUK Nigel Dennis sea kayaks and Celtic paddles. Bring the rest of your paddling kit. Not sure your setup’s up to it, or missing something? Get in touch before we go and we’ll see what we can sort.

A quick word on clothing: we’ll be on cold, exposed water in June and August, so a drysuit is recommended. This is Scotland, so come prepared for any weather, pack plenty of warm layers, and bring decent waterproofs for when the sunshine takes a break.

On the water:

  • Sea kayak and paddle (available to hire from us)

  • Split (spare) paddle (carried on deck)

  • Buoyancy aid

  • Helmet (we’ll be paddling close to rock, caves and arches)

  • Neoprene spraydeck

  • Drysuit (recommended), with warm base layers to suit the day

  • Suitable paddling footwear (wetsuit boots)

  • Pogies or paddling gloves, and a warm hat

  • Towline

  • Self-rescue kit: pump and paddle float

  • Personal throwline (if you have one)

  • Knife and whistle

  • Compass, plus any personal navigation kit you like to carry

  • A deck/day bag with sun cream, sunglasses, snacks and water for the day
